Winner with a Vision

Sam Madden won the Ms. Country Wester Pageant shortly
after Dr. Edelstein removed both her eyes.

Susan "Sam " Madden earned the crown and the title Ms. Country Western Arizona 1997-1998 in the eighth annual pageant competition. She had both her eyes removed. She has the distinction of being the only winner to ever have been escorted down the runway by a member of the Air Force Honor Guard and receive a standing ovation. Sam has been totally blind for the last seven years.

Letter written to Dr. Edelstein -

Dear Dr. Edelstein,

I thought you might like a photo of your handiwork (photo is included below). It's better than the polaroids you took in the office because my face isn't all screwed up, looking up, down, left, or right; and I was actually PLANNING on being photographed when this one was taken.

My friend Scott decided to have a bilateral evisceration when he learned how successful mine was. He called your office, but his insurance wouldn't let him go to the best oculoplastic surgeon in town. Because of his experience I have an even greater appreciation of your innovations.
